We are a group of Middle Tennessee dads who get together every week for playgroup at an area playground -- currently Wednesdays at 10:30 am. We often meet in Nashville due to its central location, however we also visit places like Bellevue, Mt. Juliet, Franklin, Donelson, Murfreesboro, and Spring Hill depending on current members.

It's usually easy to spot us on the playground - there aren't often too many groups of men there. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please drop us a line at Nashdads@gmail.com. You can also sign up for our GroupMe text alerts below.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Cause Marketing

My mom is a breast cancer survivor I am happy to say. I can still remember vividly when I got the news of her diagnosis, and the ugly war waged by both of my parents as my mom fought for her life. The chemo, the radiation, the shots my dad had to administer, and the sickness that accompanied it. Cancer is ugly, and it takes in so many ways. Those fortunate enough to win the fight are often left changed with battle scars physically and emotionally. Breast cancer gets a lot of attention because of how common it is and how many people are touched by it. You probably have someone you know who has it, had it, or will have it sadly.

I want to preface these thoughts by saying that I think awareness months or weeks can be a good thing. Creating a dialogue or activating people to take action is a great thing. However, you should give pause before you fall into the consumer trap. Usually what happens this time of year is that store shelves fill up with products colored pink or emblazoned with pink ribbons and offering the chance to support the cause of breast cancer. The products give you the chance to pay a bit more for an item you might have wanted anyways, with the promise of feeling like you are also helping the cause. This is known as cause marketing and is not exclusive to breast cancer. In reality many, not all, of these products have no oversight as to how that money is put into use for that cause if at all. Pennies to the dollar if anything at all is usually what goes back into actually doing something productive.

Here is an article discussing the cause marketing pit, but many more can be found with a quick Google search.

health.usnews.com/how-can-i-avoid-breast-cancer-charity-scams

Why am I telling you all this? It's not to be cynical or discourage attempting to be involved despite how busy life is. It's not to say that you shouldn't feel bad if you fall for these types of marketing ploys. I say all this because you work hard for your money and should get the best return from it. So rather than buying that $30 pink golf ball, or $300 NFL jersey with a ribbon stitched on the sleeve, consider donating directly to an organization which is actually in the tranches fighting for your cause. Sure, doing so doesn't afford you some sort of proof to show the world you care, like pink sunglasses...but you do get the satisfaction of knowing that you are truly making a difference.

This link is one example of a good way to give, but again, there are many out there if you take a second to look.

Edmonson Branch Library Storytime - Playgroup

This week the group is heading to the Edmonson Pike branch Library for storytime. If everyone feels like it, there is a small playground outside for the kiddos to play on afterwards.

I have to apologise...last week I didn't correctly post the playgroup. Sorry about that!

I will not be there this week as I will be at the dentist getting the ball rolling on a root canal. 😁👍 But, I'll be there next week for sure!

SPECIAL NOTE: 10am this week!

When: Wed. October 18th, at 10:00am.

Where: 5501 Edmondson Pike, Nashville, TN 37211

Tuesday, October 3, 2017

Dragon Park - Playgroup

This week we're heading to Dragon Park, also known as Fannie Mae Dees Park. There are some shade spots there, and it should be a warm one on Wednesday. So, bring the kids out for some running around!

When- Wed. October 4th, at 10:30am

Where- Dragon Park
2400 Blakemore Ave, Nashville, TN 37212

Special note about Dragon Park... parking is kind of crappy here with no real parking right on sight. I usually head up 26th Ave, and park on one of the side streets over there. Most of them are two hour limit streets, but that's about how long we get together anyway.

Also, should be sunny and high 80s for temp.

See you at the park!

Green Hills Branch Library - Storytime

This week we're in for some soggy weather again, so Green Hills Library storytime sounds like a good bet. May have a light turnout due to plagues hitting a few households (including mine), and less than favorable weather...But come on out if you can! Hopefully my tot and I will be back in the mix next week!

How to meet/join us?

I recently got a message from a dad-to-be interested in meeting up with group and it got me thinking about that awkward moment of trying to meet up with the group. I thought I would share my story, some basic information about me, in hopes of making Nashdads a little less ubiquitous to a dad looking for a group like ours and nervous about trying to meet us.
When our son was born, my wife and I both worked full-time and we tried maintaining that until he was just over a year old. The problem was, by putting him in daycare he would get sick constantly. When that happened, one of us would lose time working staying home with him, while still having to pay for the missed daycare time. If you added up the cost of daycare, the cost of the extra doctor bills, and the expenses related to going to work... nearly my entire salary was going toward keeping things going for strangers to raise him. So I left work to stay home and we tightened our belt on our finances.
I did a good job of getting out and doing activities with him, but always felt something was missing socially. Most dads can relate to the experience of taking your child somewhere, being surrounded by moms, and nobody wants to talk to you. Anyway, I was fortunate enough to meet a new neighbor who was already part of the group and so I joined up. I still remember the first time I went to a playground for a playgroup when my friend wasn't there. I hadn't met most of the other guys in the group yet. So I was approaching each man I saw with a kid saying, "are you Rick (the organizer at the time)?"  Long story short, that awkward moment passed and I have made friendships for both my son and I that I feel will last a long time.
Why am I telling you all this? To hopefully make it easier to reach out and join us. Back to the original example of a dad to be. I think the group could be great support for someone like that. But I can certainly understand not wanting to be a guy without a kid lurking around a playground to meet some strangers. So here's what can be done if you are interested but nervous:
1) If you have kids, and a schedule that allows, by all means, come on out to a playgroup. You can usually spot us as the only group of men on the playground.  Sporting our diaper bags, coffee cups, and dad bods. I promise, the awkwardness is brief.
2) If you don't have kids or your schedule doesn't allow it, or you'd just be more comfortable meeting without kids watch for a dad's night out get together. If it helps you can shoot a message first to let us know your coming.
3) Lastly, if both of those seem awkward for you, shoot a message and perhaps we can meet up for lunch or a coffee and quick introduction.
I hope that helps, and puts a slightly more personal face to the group. Why am I so passionate about Nashdads? Because it's a great group of guys who's support has meant so much to me the last two years.
Finally, to to put a little more personalization to this whole rant a little more about me. I'm an average 38 year-old stay home dad. I work part-time time at AutoZone on the weekends. I love being a dad and being with my son. I've attached a picture of me to make me easier to identify. If you hadn't caught it in previous posts, my name is Nate. Hope to see you around!

What to do in severe weather.

Hi guys, Thursday was interesting as remnants of hurricane Harvey passed through Nashville. I thought I would share a quick explaination about warning sirens and some ways you can get fast information about what is going on when they go off. Warning sirens are meant to signal potentially life threatening conditions whether that means flooding, tornadoes, or even some kind of attack like bombs falling from the sky. It's meant to tell you that you should take shelter and find safety. Typically that means an inside room (no windows is a good rule of thumb) on the lowest level of whatever building you are in. If outside, you should head inside. Usually at my house we head to the basement and lookup online what's going on. I noticed Thursday there seemed to be a lot of confusion around the city about why the sirens were going off and what should folks do... that's why I'm writing this. Anyway, once you are safe there are two tools that are good for finding out what is going on around Nashville that I like to use.

First, if there is dangerous weather around, check out

https://nashvillesevereweather.com

They have current information, a Twitter feed with current updates, and even a Periscope stream. Periscope is a service site/app allowing folks to live stream video similar to Facebook. Thursday for example, they had a meteorologist come on and show the exact locations of the tornado conditions, and he even answered questions to folks who were chatting on the page. A great tool.

Next, a police radio scanner. It's no longer a ubiquitous box you buy at a black market swap meet from a paranoid tin foil hat wearing gun toter. Now, you can simply download an app for your smartphone to listen to police, fire, and EMS radio chatter. I use this app:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.scannerradio

You can get an idea about all types of goings on with a scanner. One time when living out in Hermitage police helicopters we're circling our neighborhood. I tuned in and learned they were looking for some guy who assaulted someone. Anyway another handy tool. This particular app let's you set up alerts for when a certain number of people are listening so you can tune in. You can set different criteria for local and national notifications.

Anyway, the only other note I will offer is that they test the sirens the first Saturday of each month so you can mostly ignore that one. Hope this info helps, let me know your thoughts! Stay safe dads!

Technical Issue: Emails

Hey guys, it's been pointed out that the email notifications from Nashdads.com have a bit of a delay... twelve hours delay it seems. For purposes of planning and keeping up with what's going on, try following the Nashdads Facebook page as it gets automatically updated with posts from the website too. I'm going to look into ways to make these emails come quicker though to make planning easier in the future.

So Long and Thanks for all the Playgroups!

We talked about this last week, but wanted to put it out there that tomorrow is my last official playgroup as head of Nashdads.  M is starting a three day a week pre-K program, so it is time for some new blood to step up to bat.  I've asked Nate to take over organizing playgroup each week, so Steve you can direct all your complaining to him going forward.

I started attending Nashdads back in 2004, before it even had that name.  I've seen five guys before me handle organizing things and countless dads cycle in and out of our merry bunch.  Each time, the group continues to flourish and find great people - maybe because caring about your kids is kind of self selecting.  Regardless, I have no doubt this group will continue meeting when our current toddlers are teenagers and a new group of men are involved.

Thanks for letting me be a part of all this - I'll still attend when I can (and sometimes maybe just be that creepy guy on the playground with no kid), but I have valued spending time with our former and current dads and can't wait to watch as the group continues!

August 2 - Dragon Park

We'll meet tomorrow at Dragon Park, since I need to be kind of local and has always been a favorite.  Usual time.  Look at 26th Avenue for parking options, as there are usually spots there.  I think the residential streets in that area have one hour parking.
